Background and Story

SFC

In the original, the Minstrel is simply an NPC who allows the player to listen to different music until they reach a certain point in the game. At this point, he begins to tell the characters hints about the location of Fatestones. Once the player reaches the endgame period, if they have good karma from their actions like not killing Galahad for his Ice Sword and completing the questlines for the four summons instead of killing them, the Minstrel will offer a special quest to gain weapons from the Great War of the gods.

PS2

The minstrel helps you remove certain party members from the party and after certain quests. The nature of the Minstrel/Bard, he will also tell you various Stories about people and events in Mardias, as well as playing songs.

All of the Minstrel's Stories: Part 1, Part 2.

If you repeatedly speak to him in any pub he will always offer to join you. However, he will leave the party every time you enter a pub, but can be instantly re-recruited again by talking to him.

Trivia

  • The Minstrel cannot be recruited during any of the penultimate quests: Trials of Elore, Auldburg or Netherworld, but can be used for the final battle if you completed either Auldburg or the Netherworld.
  • It is revealed through the Trials of Elore that the Minstrel is none other than the god Elore himself.
  • While he was simply an NPC in the original SFC version, hacking the game showed that he was originally planned to be a recruitable character s his name appears on the list of characters than can be placed in the party, though he uses Dowd's sprite instead, showing he was unfinished. The remake finally allows him to be recruited.
